Laura Lynn Johnson

My work begins with observation. I am drawn to the way landscapes and even flora hold memory. I believe these places such as rivers, gardens, coastlines, and open spaces are intertwined with our personal experience and collective history over time.

Working primarily in watercolor and mixed media, I explore both representation and abstraction. Some paintings begin with direct observation while others come from from remembered places, personal photographs, or vintage ephemera I have collected. Layers of transparent color, mark-making, and even texture allow the image to evolve showing what I view as a relationship between the materials and the place.

The natural environment and outdoor spaces are both a subject and metaphor for me. I am particularly interested in places of transition: rivers, shorelines, gardens, and areas where the natural processes meet and interact. These type of environments reflect cycles of growth, loss, adaptation, and renewal like my own life.

My background as an art therapist has also shaped my studio practice. I want to capture the emotional and sensory experience of being present within a landscape or a place.

Watercolor and Gouache remain central to my art practice because of its ability to balance some control but yet it can be highly unpredictable. I enjoy the transparency of those mediums particularly on paper. My art practice requires me to have the willingness to respond and adapt since at times these types of materials are difficult to control. Through my art making, each of my paintings becomes a record of that process.
