Laura Clay

Is a Mexican-American artist based in Austin, Texas. She magnifies the corridors of each of her cultures and the identities tied to each. They show the vulnerable link between Mexico and the United States, the struggle between planning and intuition. There is a constant dialogue between organic vs. geometric, chaos vs. order, fiesta vs. structure. Through her artwork, she reveals her ethnic flexibility. Although at times advantageous, there can also exist a sense of displacement — a sense of not belonging here nor there. Her art practice intervenes at this crux, examining how race and ethnicity intersects in the identity of bicultural individuals.
